So it has taken me over a week to compose this post! This picture is from right after Gus got his horse swing. He LOVES this swing. We swing on it everyday, but he loves it so much so, that every evening when Jake gets home they have to go swing on it, whether it be just for a minute or several minutes or in the case of last Friday.....1 entire hour!
Last Friday some friends were coming to town and we needed a few groceries so when Jake got home he and the kids headed out to the backyard for some swing time while I went up the road to the store. I left and they had been swinging and I got home and they were wrapping up the session. These are no mild swing sessions. These are swinging high, high to the sky, in the trees, grabbing leaves, spinning, twisting, turning and making momma, who LOVES to swing, turn green watching swing sessions!
I got home with the groceries, got in the house, Jake headed upstairs to change, Mabel was asleep in her cradle, Gus asked for Oreo's (his treat from the store) and I was getting him settled when I heard in a pathetic little voice, "Mom want hug you" and a loud gurgle in his belly. Then it hit. Baby bear was sick from all the swinging. We managed to get to the bathroom, Mabel remained asleep and I did my best to stay calm and carry on caring for my sick little baby bear. I know no one likes vomit, but I do believe some are more tolerable to it than others. I have a serious phobia and I get all shaky and nervous and sweaty and clammy and I can just go on and on, but bottom line I just freak out when I hear the word vomit. I must have kept my cool because Gus wanted me to hug and hold him after it was all said and done. They, whoever they is, say it is different when it's your own. I guess "they" are right! Perhaps, the 5 weeks of projectile vomiting from Mabel conditioned me for this particular night.
I immediately called Jake, yes, from downstairs to upstairs, and he came running down - he really knows my phobia! We got Gus upstairs and I was able to jump in the tub for a quick bath (our friends were due to arrive within the hour, we had dinner plans with them, my parents were coming to watch the kids and I was full of spit-up and now vomit - the joys of motherhood, but I would not trade it for the world).
Gus and I were sitting in his bed discussing what had happened and we decided that he must have swung too much and got a little motion sickness. He got quiet and whimpered "Mommy, want hug you" again. I asked him if he felt sick again and in the most lethargic, pathetic voice I got a really low "yes". Off to the bathroom we went. We made it and I have to say for a 3 year old he was an amazing patient. No mess. I think he could sense my uncertainty and nervousness because he was just so calm, cool and collected. This time Jake was downstairs and we were upstairs. Pinki and Pops had arrived so now we had a nurse in the house! I was instructed by Gus that I was to be his nurse. Mom knows my phobia as well, so in typical mother fashion she came up to lend a hand. Thanks, Mom!
I debated leaving him and changed my mind several times, but mom and dad insisted we go to dinner with our friends and that Gus would be fine. We headed out, ate and then I called to check on him. He had gotten sick one more time, but again, was a wonderful patient and did not make any mess. Mom said after that he was back to his old chatty self! He slept through the night, woke up in a fantastic mood and made his first canoe trip on Saturday! Thankfully this was no tummy bug, but Mr. Safety Patrol has been monitoring his swing time, speed and duration since then!

So to get myself back on the blogging wagon I have put myself up to a 30 day photo challenge. Most 3
Sunday we went to the dump with our recycling and there is a playground right next to it so we took Gus over there to play for a bit since the weather was decent. There is a sandbox there that everyone brings old trucks and sand toys to and just leaves them there for the kids to play with. Gus along with every other kid loves it!
We were out there and three other kids showed up and we told Gus to tell them hi. Here is how the conversation went. Mind you the kids were 10, 7 and 3.
Gus: Hi kids!!
7 year old: Hi! I am (name). What is your name?
Gus: Name Gus! (as he pats his chest)
7 year old: I am 7. How old are you"
Gus: Still 2!!
I interject and say, "yep, you sure are still 2, but not for too much longer."
Gus: Most 3!!
7 year old and his dad: You are almost 3?!!
Gus: Yes (nodding his head)!
Very, very cute conversation.
Jake and I just looked at each other and smiled. We are so proud of you, Gusley. We often find ourselves asking each other, is he really our child? We love you and keep on keeping on!! You are such an inspiration to us! Each day you teach/remind me of a valuable lesson in life in your actions and the simplicity of what you do. Thank you! You seem to be a lover, like your daddy and not a fighter. If ever a toy or anything gets taken from you, you just move on to something else and shrug it off. This my friend, will come in handy one day as you will see that it is the small things in life that matter and life is not about having it all, but just living and loving what you have.

From bad to GOOD!
I swear if we have another rainy day and/or snow day I think I may loose my shit. And that my friends is putting in nicely! This pregnant momma can only think of so much to do on these days. We did have a nice weekend and we were able to get out the house and in the yard and FINALLY take down our Christmas lights (yes, we were THOSE people)! Anyway, today was yet another rainy day here on the Hill. It rained from the moment we woke up until, well it is still raining as I type. Don't get me wrong, I love rain when I can sleep late and when Jake is home and we can all hang in our jammies together and just max and relax to the extreme.
Today was not one of those days. I woke up to Gus scratching the nape of his neck and behind his ears profusely. I immediately checked his head for lice...nothing, thank goodness. The itchy spots became very red and started to spread to his neck, chest, upper back, stomach and as the day wore on his little butt. I called mom and she said it sounded to her like it could be Fifth's Disease
I gave him some antihistamine and that calmed the itching for about 4 hours (which mind you was the last dose in that bottle). We have tubes of every cream, ointment, etc. known to man, but when I need hydrocortizone, there is none to be found. After the 4 hours the child was scratching like a monkey with fleas, so I gave in and gave him a dose of benadryl (SUGAR FREE, DYE FREE, ALCOHOL FREE) thinking this would help him to take a wonderful nap on this rainy day...NOT. Totally opposite affect. 5pm rolls around and he is begging for a nap, I divert his attention and we do some more activities that I know he is tired of, but he goes along with me.
Meanwhile the rash is still there, red as ever, he is so agitated and we are at the mercy of the traffic Jake is in to get home, because he is stopping at Walgreens for more Zyrtec and Hydrocortizone. Finally the garage door opens. DADDY!!!! Shortly after Pinki drives up to take a look at the rash, my two saving graces of the day! Pinki says yep, she is pretty sure it is in fact Fifth's Disease and that once the rash appears they are no longer contagious, but that the runny nose he had for the entire week leading up to today was certainly a symptom, but how were we to know.
Jake also picked up some oatmeal bath so I get Gus in the tub, he gets a nice bath and lets me rub the ointment all over him and takes his medicine like a charm. And this my friends is when my day starts to get good. The "holy trinity" for us to have a second child was that we would like for Gus to be sleeping in his own bed, to be potty trained and to be weened from nursing. He has met 2 of the 3. We have really been talking to him about weening and that that milk will be for the baby and I think it is all starting to come together.
Here is how my day got good: As we are going through our nightly routine of turning on his "ainbow cheen" (rainbow machine - humidifier), the battery operated tee candles and finding Goldbug in this book , putting his rocks under his pillow and getting his pillow pet, he decides that we should take the crib mattress from under his bed out and he will sleep "down der" and mommy will sleep "up der" (in his twin bed). So we agree and I tell him that I will sleep in his bed and I will hold his hand. He gives his good night kisses and we get in to our respective beds and hold hands and Jake turns out the light. Granted he had no nap today, so I know he was tired, he was out in 5 mins. Never asked to nurse!!! He just woke up about 30 mins ago and I went in his room and just held him and rocked him in my arms and he fell back asleep and again, did not ask to nurse! This is a bittersweet moment for me. I have loved the 3 years I have had nursing him and I am so glad that I have been able to do that for him as I strongly feel that it has been a positive in his life, but at the same time, Momma needs a break before the next one comes along (which, sorry baby #2, but I don't think you will be nursing this long, but then again, never say never, right?!) So that my friends is how my day went from bad to good and to top it off the baby is just a fluttering all over in my belly right now and the house is quiet so I am off to have some chocolate milk and enjoy the peace and quiet for a few minutes.
Good night!

Gus goes to gym - day 1
Today was Gus' first day of parent-toddler gym. He LOVED it! He was totally in his element. I am so happy that he is able to experience this at the same age I was when I was first introduced to gymnastics. I loved it from day one and I still love it....my dream gift is a square or rectangle trampoline! Anyway, back to his first day! As soon as we got there, he was looking all around watching the older kids flip and run and jump. He was fixated on them. His coach came and introduced herself to us and he would not take his eyes off of her. When it was our turn to go to the class he followed right behind Coach Tia. Once we were in the room she had a little obstacle course set up for them. In the class it was Gus and two other little boys (one older and one younger than him). He did all of the obstacles just not in order! He walked the balance beam with no trouble, went over and under some mats, did superman on the belly roll and sat in a rocker that looked like pac-man and had no fear when we rocked him all the way back! He also did an assisted handstand....he loves to be upside down! When it was time to go in the big gym the kids have to hold on to a rope and follow the teacher. He did just that. In the gym he did the zip-line, the inflatable racing lanes, foam pit, swing and trampoline! This class was a free trial, but by the end of the class Jake was asking if I brought the check book so we could sign him up! To see the excitement on his face and how much he enjoyed the class will be so worth the monthly tuition. Not to mention he ate like a champion when we got home and he was oh so ready for bed!
Though he did not follow the directions just so, the Coach did tell us not to fret that the first few classes are like that, then they start to get the hang and really want to follow and do as the others do! As for now it is a go. I will be sure to let you know how next week goes!

A little change
Please excuse me while I am in the process of changing up the blog a bit. I am still working on how to change the heading to be centered and maybe boxed (just not on top of my picture)! Any suggestions or tips on how to accomplish this are certainly welcomed!
For now, enjoy the bright, tangerine that reminds me of the summertime!!

Update...

We are still pee-peeing in the potty 3-5 times a day and sometimes on the floor just after he gets off the potty!!! That is a-okay with me. It is all progress! Not much to report just keeping a log for myself!
The weather is beautiful. Every window in the house is open. The wind is blowing. Not one light is on in the house and it is very bright! Gus is napping. I am having to stop myself from eating an entire bag of animal crackers! Buttercup is laid out in the sun. Looking forward to a nice walk, workout and a big tall glass of wine!!

I just came across the above pictures and am daydreaming of life living in one of them!!!! It would be so serene and peaceful in the PINK one and very fun and bright in the ORANGE one! On my bucket list is to live in a thatch roof and a vibrant colored house! For now...back to day dreaming!

Potty Progress!!!!
I am proud to say that we have turned the corner and are on our way to being diaper free! Fingers crossed! There is no pressure for Gus to use the potty, but if he tells us "pee" or "poo poo" we bring him to the toilet. He was only pee peeing on the potty, but last night he did both!!!! He was in the bathroom with me while I was washing my hair (hanging over the side of the tub) and he was telling me "poo poo poo" so with a head full of shampoo, dripping water and suds all over, I took off his pants and diaper and put him on the potty and he did just what he was telling me he had to do!!!!!! It made the clean up of the water and suds SO WORTH IT!!!
I am proud to say that he did the same thing this morning and it was a total success (#1 and #2)! He wore cloth training underwear all day today and did have 2 accidents, but that is to be expected and they are rather funny. He just stands there frozen saying "uh oh"! Overall today he managed to poop in the potty once and pee pee in the potty at least 6-7 times! GO GUSLEY!!! Mommy and Daddy are so very proud of you and your eagerness to learn and do new things.
Since this is a blog to keep family updated, but also to log milestones, I would like to make note that he brought this phase of potty training upon himself. We have been reading potty books and letting him flush the toilet and wash his hands and he is the one that initiated him sitting on the big potty! What a big boy! This should make our trips in the very near future very interesting! I think I will be putting a large glass jar in the car in the event of an emergency pee pee!!
I am sorry if I overload with potty updates, but this is how I log Gusley's milestones so bear with me! And for those of you that are wondering, but don't want to pry, eventually we MAY want another child, but the following must be met before we can even think about that. (1) Gusley is potty trained; (2) Gusley sleeps in his own bed (we still co-sleep and honestly, I don't think we would have it any other way!); and (3) Gusley is completely weened from nursing (he is still a night nurser). Again this is for my own records (so that I can remember what to do IF that second one should ever come along!) Toodles!!

Earth Day 2010
Today is Earth Day! What did you do to help our Earth? We turned off the A/C, opened all the windows and did not turn on any lights until it was almost dark out. This is something that we pretty much already do on a daily basis because our house has awesome natural light at all times of the day! We really enjoy having all the windows open hearing the birds chirping and the wind rustling through the bushes. The sounds of Spring bring a smile to my face and peace in the air! We did go on a walk and planted some more wildflowers. Not to mention I did not wash one single batch of laundry today. I think overall we had a really good Earth Day and we treated Mother Nature pretty darn good on her day! If you are interested in ways to protect our Earth and promote Green Peace you can sign up for emails from Greenpeace.org and they will keep you in the know!!

In a Pinch
These days Jake and I are real cute for a twenty-something year old couple. I have a bruised eye and last night he cracked his neck and as a result has a pinched nerve. He went to the doctor this morning and they examined him thoroughly, gave him a heavy duty anti-inflammatory shot and two Rx's and told him to get some rest today. We are all on rainy day schedule today and will more than likely have a movie marathon tonight!!
We have been exercising and watching what we eat, trying to set good examples for Gus and now Jake is walking like Frankenstein and I can't bend down without having a painful rush of pressure in my head. We are something else. I really hope we are not getting old before our time, but then again, it could be worse, way worse. So we will be thankful for all the things we CAN do!

Inspiration..........
My spring project is to transform Gus' room from a 'nursery' to a 'toddler's' room!! I have been perusing the internet for pictures and ideas and today I had my ah-ha moment of inspiration! I happened upon this woman's blog, her name is Lauren and she has a son about Gus' age and her taste are very similar to my own (looks like she has a much, much bigger budget) but, I have to start somewhere. Not to mention she decorated his room with the Little Golden Book, The Saggy Baggy Elephant, which is one of the pictures I have framed in Gus' room!!! I can't wait to get started with this project! First things first, convert the crib to a toddler bed and out with the changing table then we will take it one step at a time!! I will make sure to post pictures of my progress!

Seeing stars
So here is my vision of cooking.........................cute kitchen, precious apron (and a very narrow waistline), GREEN plants, freshly baked muffins, nice spring colors and a cute kitty!
However, I had this vision today..........................................black eye, seeing stars and saying to many choice words in under a minute....read on!
However, I had this vision today..........................................black eye, seeing stars and saying to many choice words in under a minute....read on!On the menu was corn on the cob, so I was in the pantry getting the big stock pot down to boil the corn in. As I was getting the pot down I did not see that it was pushing the cheese sandwich griddle pan off of its hook until it came crashing down on my left eye.......OUCH and a few other choice words came flying out of my mouth. I have a nice bulge and bruise on my left upper eye and it hurts pretty stinkin' bad. I feel a lot of pressure if I bend down or look to my left. Yes, the corn did get boiled and Jake baked some really awesome Tilapia! Thanks for making a house call, Pinki! You are the best...love you!!

A child fare cost how much???
So Jake and I are going to be taking two 9hour trips almost a month apart and we were trying to figure out how we could cut some of the drive time and not have us all cooped up in the car for 36hours total. Jake suggested we fly down to NOLA for Sarah's wedding and found $80 each way tickets for he and I. On Southwest's website they say to call them for a "child fare". I did. I gave the dates and Gus' age and the lady on the other end is pecking away and comes back with this, "this is a discounted rate for the child fare, and for the dates you gave it will be $353.60, which is $170 something (it was here that I got a little distracted and did not get the exact each way amount and I do not care to figure it out!) I reply, "Ma'am, my husband found $80 each way tickets on your website. Why is a discounted child fare doubled?". Her response, "You can buy an adult sear for your child." the conversation ended and I hung up very confused with a purplexed look on my face!
End result: we will be in the for 36 hours in a months time!

Happy 81st Birthday Maw from the Little Casanova!!
Today is my grandmother's 81st birthday! She is one of my best friends. Growing up she called me her little shadow because when she remarried I cried and carried on and insisted I should go on their honeymoon!! Sorry Maw, I have always had a super strong love for you!! She also calls me Laura Lee and every time I see her she has to twirl the curls on my neck. She has ALWAYS loved my curls. This has to be one of the sweetest memories I have and I will always cherish those twirls! It is very fitting that we are so close because anyone that knows her and sees me says that I look just like her. When she was 20ish and when I was 20ish we looked almost identical. In her hay day, I picture her being a very vivacious, out-going, spontaneous little ball of energy.
I can talk to her about anything and she just listens and adds her thoughts on an as needed basis. She has always supported me in every thing I have ever done and has always been there for every single member of our family. I grew up in her back yard and the first place I lived when I moved out was next door to her in a garage apartment when Jake and I got married. We had a small compound going on as my Uncle lived next door to us. Growing up it was a very safe 'compound'. Every night I would call Maw to let her know I was on my way over to kiss her goodnight and she would wait at the back door for me. Often with a finger full of finger cookies for me (I recently introduced these to Gus and he LOVES them just as much as I do!). After we said our good nights and gave our kisses I would call my parents to let them know I was on my way back and she would watch me run home out of her back door and my mom or dad would wait for me at our back door. It seems like those moments were just yesterday.
We lived too close to my elementary school for me to ride the bus so she would pick me up everyday from school and as soon as we got to her house I would have a bowl of Fruit Loops or Corn Flakes and watch The Flintstones and The Jetsons while waiting on mom or dad to get off of work. Those were the days!!
Leaving my comfort zone of 25 years was the most difficult decision I have ever had to make. I remember the day I talked to Maw about us moving. I cried and cried and cried, of course it did not help that I was pregnant with her first great-grandchild at the time, but she just held me as tight and as close as she could and let me cry my heart out. When I stopped to take a breath she told me, "Laura Lee, it will be hard, but do not stay here for me. You and Jake need to do what is best for y'all and your baby. You know what the best thing and the right thing to do is. Do it. I will be here. I am a phone call away and I will not stop loving you and Jake. I mean it, do not stay here because of me. I WILL BE OKAY." I know those words were so hard for her to say, but at the same time I knew she meant it and it was genuine. After plenty more tears, hugs and Kleenex I felt better about our decision to move. That is not to say that moving day was not one of the hardest days of my life. I could not look at her house with out crying, when I walked in to tell her goodbye it was horrible. I lost it and I just could not hug her tight enough. I wanted to reverse our decision, but I knew that is not what she would have wanted. (As I type this I have have a huge lump in my throat and my eyes are welling up.)
I made a promise to her that I would try to call everyday. I am disappointed that I have not done so. I do try to call at least once a week, but I have made a promise with myself that I will call her more. When she hears my voice on the other end she sounds so excited and I know it makes her day. I do send her pictures pretty often so she can see how much Gus is growing. As you can see, my grandmother is very special to me. She always has been and she always will be. I can only hope to be half the wife, mother, grandmother she has been to all of us. She is the rock in the family. She has been dealt alot and she has taken it all in stride and she doesn't judge.
I really wish we could have been there to celebrate her 81st Birthday, but we did call and sing to her so it was like we were there! The picture below is Maw on my birthday 2009. She got a kick out of my pink wig so we put it on her for giggles! She loved it. I think for a minute it took her back to her youth...a place she hadn't been in quite sometime!
At this point I am sure you are wondering why the post is from the Little Casanova. This evening Jake and I took Gus to a local park, but it was too cool to stay there more than 5 minutes so we went for a drive while the sun went down and Gus was able to watch the moon rise. We ended up in a little city 20 miles from home and decided to eat at Pizza Hut. They had a great special and it was super clean so we thought we would give it a try. When we got to our booth there was booth of 3 ladies behind us and they immediately melted over Gus. They had some of the Hershey's dessert sticks and Gus kept eyeing them. They had 2 left and offered them to him. He did not hesitate to take the basket from them and proceeded to gobble the sticks up. He kept flirting with them through the entire meal and they loved every minute of it. They all told him goodbye when they left and he got a little bashful but still managed to crack a smile at them. One lady came back to leave her tip and she stopped at our table and gave Gus a dollar bill! He was quick to take the dollar from her! Had we known it was that easy, we would have had him acting a long time ago! NOT! So his new nick name is Little Casanova. Maw got a kick out of this story and just loves his nickname!
Happy Birthday Maw May! We love you more than I could ever write on this blog. You are an inspiration to me and a very special friend to me. I love you and miss you so very much. I wish you could make the trip up here because I think you would just love it!

Almost 2!!!
I can't believe that as of midnight tonight we will have a 2 year old! It feels like yesterday that I was calling Jake telling him we are having a baby TOMORROW!!
I now know why it has been said that the first 3 years are some of the most fundamental years of your life. We have watched Gusley naturally latch on to nursing like a pro in the first hour or two of his life. Then there was cooing, rolling over, tummy time squirming all over the blankets, wobbly sit up to straight back sitting up, then up on all fours rocking back in forth which quickly turned to crawling, crawling up the steps, to pulling up, to walking on the edge of furniture to taking his first steps on our 3rd wedding anniversary, 12.09.08. The walking soon turned into a race walk which was quickly mastered and soon evolved into a run!! Now he climbs the stairs like a pro and chooses whether or not he will use the railing. He is babbling up a storm and his vocabulary seems to be expanding! His recognition is incredible!
There are days that I ask myself am I doing enough? should he be in a daycare with other children? do we have too many toys? do I read to him enough? do we watch too many kid shows? etc.... Then, when I ask him to go get something or what something is and he shows me or gets it correct on the first try all of these questions are laid to rest. The answers to the above questions are as follows (this is my opinion): Jake tells me I am doing more than enough and even though Gus may not be talking as much as other kids his age he knows what's up! No, he should not be in daycare. Plain and simple there is nothing they can do with him that I can't. I love being able to be home with him everyday and seeing his smiling face when he wakes up from his nap. As for toys, well let me just say that since he is not in daycare I feel like I need to have many options for him to play with different objects throughout the day. He has an art area, a reading nook, a kitchen area, music space, pretend play area, building blocks, a train track and a space dedicated to his Little People which he loves so much. I feel that this is necessary to make him a well rounded little fellow. I would much rather have too many toys than not enough to where he is bored to tears and ram shackling everything in the house everyday because he is left with a bucket of bits and pieces that he can't make heads or tails out of any of it. He loves to take things out and then pick them up where they go so it really isn't a big deal to "pick-up" after him because he doesn't leave much of a mess. That is my theory on toys and I am sticking to it!! I read to him at least 4 times a day and usually we read no less than 4 books per session so YES, I do read to him enough! As for kid shows, he has his favorites so I think it seems like we watch them more than we actually do because he has a select few that he really likes. It is so incredible to see what an impact we have made on him in these last 2 years.
I have always felt that I have a strong maternal instinct/maternal nature and I am so happy to finally put it to use with my own child. It has to be one of the greatest feelings ever...the bond between Gus and I is intangible and I LOVE it!!
I know I digressed just a tad, but that was on my mind as I am pondering having a 2 year old and after all, I like to keep track of my thoughts so there are my thoughts for the day!

Friday 02.12.10
Though this post may not be dated 02.12.10, to me it is still that date as I am still up getting things in order for our company this weekend and for the big 2nd birthday party here at our house!!!
In an attempt to save money, I have managed to make Gus' "birthday shirt", just about all the decorations, appetizers and desserts. At Jake's suggestion, I went ahead and let Publix handle the cake!!! This year's theme "Sesame Street"! I have to say that I am proud of my decorations and will post some pictures for all to see!
Back to my artsy creative land I go................sweet dreams!!

There are no more....
I am a little sad tonight as the last re-run of Conan aired. Even though the last few weeks have been re-runs I have been watching them. I don't know what we will watch at 10:30pm now. Well for the next 2 weeks the Olympics, but after that, perhaps we will go to bed early??!! So no more Conan until he surfaces and announces what/when/where he will be doing what/when/where. Bad choice NBC, bad choice, but you have made your bed so now you must lay in it. Time will tell if Leno can hold the crowd.....
