Mommy's new must have

As I mentioned on Tuesday, Gus started with the snotty nose. In an effort to give him relief and get him on the road to recovery we decided to purchase a Vapor Plug In. The last time he had the stuffy, puffy nose we attempted to use the good ole fashion vaporizer. WHAT A JOKE that was. The directions said to put hot water add the solution and if in 10 minutes it did not start to 'vaporize' add 1/8 teaspoon of salt. I did it the first 4 times.....ALL TO NO AVAIL. As soon as the salt hit the water the damn thing would start spitting water out of the spout, making a huge mess. I tried less salt, same thing, even less salt, same thing, a pinch of salt...nothing happened. There seemed to be no in between with this thing. By the 4th time, I was ready to throw it out the window. Jake came in and I read the directions and he did EXACTLY what they said...it began spitting. After several attempts he thought he had the right combination and guess what as soon as he left the room...SPITTING HOT WATER. We had a garage sale a few weeks later and some poor lady bought it from us for $5.00. I did not have the heart to tell her about all the troubles that thing caused us, I was just glad to see it go.



So, as you can imagine, when Gus started with the runny nose I was not a happy camper because all the memories of the good ole vaporizer came flooding back. That is until I remembered reading on a friend's FB page that someone recommended the plug-in. WHAT A SUPER INVENTION! The night light on it is a little bright, but the vapors it emits is just right. We have used it every night and each day Gus wakes up with a little less snot. We will be keeping extra refills here in the house at all times and this little piece of magic will make the 'must pack' list for future travels. I highly recommend this item if you or your little one has a stuffy nose or cough!

Day 2 of the Cajun snow experience

Today was a pajama day for us cajuns! We did not leave the house except to get Buttercup out to do her business. We had a little more snow and freezing temps with no sun in sight. The ground is like a plank of ice. We can walk on it and it does not break in most parts. Jake walked to the mailbox and you could barely see any of his foot prints!! I have posted pictures of our day. Buttercup is still not too brave, but she is so cute in her sherpa!! We are hoping to get out and about for a little while tomorrow as we all have serious cabin fever!! Will be sure to post some pictures. We did have a little excitement....a few cars fishtailed in the curve on our street because they were driving to fast. Also, I guess folks were not able to get their cars out of their driveways because at least 30 people walked by going to Kroger which is about 3/4th of a mile or so from the house. One poor sole must have been desperate...we could see in his bag Dr. Pepper and Potato Chips!! He will be able to tell his kids/grandkids that he walked a mile in the snow for DP and chips!!!! Happy Snow Day!!

NOLA Craving Satisfied!

For the NFC championship game I made a spinach dip and deep fried bow tied pasta to go along with the dip. The came out very close to Copeland's back home. I think I just didn't have as much 'extras' i.e. fried shrimp, oysters, fish, onion rings, etc. in my grease!!! It was delicious and Gus ate his share over the course of 3 days. We will be having this again soon, very soon!!!

Pajama Party

A little back-blogging.....Gusley telling Paw all about the Backyardagains!!! The weather was a little crazy...cold, rainy, and a little bit of snow, so we had a few lazy mornings while Gi-Gi and Paw were visiting. It felt good to stay in our jammies till noon one day!!

Cajuns experience snow....

Today was the day of the BIG SNOW. The meteorologists were going bananas in anticipation of the Winter Snow Storm 2010! Jake headed down to the city for work and Gus and I held down the fort. Jake called us every so often to see if it was snowing yet. No, honey, not yet was my reply for the first 2 or 3 calls and texts. By 11am the storm had arrived and within an hour and a half the ground was covered. As it continued to snow the toys in the back yard got shorter and shorter. Buttercup had to go out but has a very strong aversion to getting her paws wet and would not get off the stoop. I had to go out and put her in the yard. She did her business and within an hour the snow had covered her paw prints and her package. We will have to stay away from the vicinity if we make a snow angel or a snowman tomorrow!! It stopped snowing around 5:30ish and turned into freezing rain/sleet which is what it is still doing as I type (12:12am). More snow is expected overnight (another 1-4 inches).

We did a little experiment to see how fast the sleet was falling...we put a cup out on our railing and within an hour it was 3/4 full. It is really coming down. This is the first big snow these Louisianains see. It is so peaceful watching the snowfall. This afternoon as Gus took his nap I just vegged out and watched out the windows as the snow fell to the ground. It is nearly impossible to follow one particular snowflake to the ground, but I tried over and over again until I got dizzy!!

This is totally opposite of a hurricane, but at the same time exactly alike. Everyone rushes to the stores for last minute groceries, the stores shut down early, the news stations are out and about the towns, everyone hunkers down in their homes and simply wait the storm out. The only difference is you don't board up your windows. During hurricanes if you lose power, yes it is hot, but you can at least open the windows to get a draft. During a winter storm if you lose power, you bundle up with jackets, blankets, etc and stay as warm as possible. The thought of this scares me...we do not have a gas range or a fireplace so how would we keep warm is something I am praying we do not have to figure out. I can't say that I prefer one over the other because I prefer neither! Below are a few pictures from the day. I will be posting more tomorrow! Enjoy!!

Living here in TN Gus is automatically eligible to join Dolly Parton's Imagination Library where he gets a book a month from the organization. He has gotten some really nice books through this program. At this time, his favorite three books (besides Goodnight Moon) have come from this program! Thank you, Dolly!!

In Raindrop, Plop there is a little dog and Gus finds the dog very funny on each page!! I think I mentioned before that he knows 'eat' in sign language and there is a page that has 4 squirrels looking for something to eat and every time we get to the page before we can read it he is signing 'eat'! Smart dude!! The last page is when the sun comes out and he points and points to the sun while smiling and laughing and saying "un-un"!



In A Mud Pie for Mother Little Pig is trying to find the right gift for Mother Pig's Birthday! This by far I think is Gus' favorite as he asks us to read it over and over and over!!

Kitty Up is very simple two word sentences throughout the entire book. Most of which we have sound effects for which Gus really enjoys! If ever you come across these three books and have a little tot in the house, I highly recommend them!

Boogie Woogie Flu

Every time one of us gets sick I can help but think of Johnny River's "Rockin Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu"! I mentioned last night that Gus started with a leaky nose. Well it has officially turned into a snotty nose. Poor baby, he carries around a Kleenex and wipes his little nose every chance he gets. Lucky for me he likes to take his medicine and he lets me put the saline nose drops in and he has mastered blowing his own nose! He does not have the flu. Simply a running nose and a cough...just enough to make you feel like crap. He has been in good spirits and has not lost his appetite!

Tonight as Jake and I watched the State of the Union Address and Gus fell asleep in my arms. We found ourselves sitting on the sofa listening to him snore and just starring at him and smothering him with kisses. We smother him with kisses when he is awake, but for some reason a sleeping baby is just too tempting not to kiss. One day we are going to wake him up, but until then we will keep giving him sleeping kisses!!!

Every night Jake and I recap our day and the other night he asked if I thought he kissed Gus too much. I immediately said you can never kiss him too much and please keep kissing him and showering him with love! Though Gus is a mommy's boy, he is very much a daddy's boy as well! He just loves looking out the window in the evening for Jake to drive up! Too sweet!!

Wacky Weather

This past weekend it was nice enough outside that a jacket was not necessary until the evening when the wind really picked up. Sunday was decent. Then on Monday I asked Gus if he wanted to go outside to play for a bit and when we got to the door it was SNOWING! It did not stick on the ground, but there were flurries flying all around....CRAZY!! Yesterday was pretty chilly, but tolerable. Same thing today, however, it did drop a little more. Now tomorrow the high may be 38-40 and then we are suppose to get sleet and rain tomorrow night and SNOW on Friday, they just aren't saying how much snow, because the really don't know! If this is the case and we get lots of snow, I will be sure to post and share pictures!!

Weather truly is wacky. It can be 65-70 one minute and snowing the next! We are staying warm and trying to stay well, though Gus started with a leaky nose tonight.....hoping it doesn't get any worse than that.

T is for Turtle

Last night Gus became very fond of a stuffed turtle. He brought it to Publix, held it during the entire Saints game, fell asleep with it and woke up looking for it! Today when I would ask him what he had he would say "tu-tul"!!! Not a very pronounced "l" sound, but hey, I'll take that! It seems that each day he is saying something new. It is so fun to watch this unfold day by day. We have been drawing letters and objects to correspond with the letters on his chalkboard everyday. He really enjoys this! I have decided to take a letter a week and work on it with him. This week is the start so we are beginning with "A". At the end of each week I will give a progress report.

Super Saints!!!!

This is a day that every Louisianian has longed for...the New Orleans Saints are going to the Superbowl!!!!!!!!!! We watched the game at Mom and Dad's and we had Gus saying 'touuuu dowwwn'!! He fell asleep during the last 2 minutes of the game, slept through the overtime and all of our celebratory yelling!!!! What a game, what a game!! I had a lump in my throat throughout the entire game and by the end of the game the lump was still there and my eyes were welled with tears!!! This is so exciting and we wish we could have been in the south to celebrate with family and friends, but we called as soon as the game was over and people were ecstatic!! NOLA needed this. It was time for something good to happen in the city and to unite everyone once again and the Saints have done just that! Thank you Drew Brees for acting on your calling to come to NOLA and thank you Hartley for kicking the winning field goal!!! These next 2 weeks waiting for the Superbowl are going to seem like the longest 2 weeks of my life, well except for the last 2 weeks of my pregnancy and the 2 weeks leading up to our wedding!!!!! Who Dat!!

We are getting really excited about tomorrow's game! A little nervous too!! We are a little bummed that we will won't be back at our old stomping ground for the game. This is really history in the making!

Our good friend in Slidell wrote a song and made a video to go along with it titled "Who's Gonna Win Dat Superbowl? Dem Saints is!!" It has already gotten 6000+ hits on You Tube!! If you have 3 minutes to spare check it out. I have linked it to the title of the song in this post!!

Actions speak louder than words

The other night Jake and I were reading books with Gus before bedtime and he has one that he is very fond of.....My First ABC Book. Each page has a letter and several objects that start with that letter. He points to the letter on each page and to the objects that he recognizes, e.i. dog, camera, car, xylophone, lion, apple, banana, elephant, drum, fish etc. When we got to H the other night he pointed to the hammer then went over to his tool box and got his hammer and started hammering on his wooden toys. Jake and I just looked at each other and smiled!! It is a very rewarding feeling to know that he is listening to all that we show him and tell him! At this age, his actions speak much, much louder than his words!!

He loves stars! Anytime there is a star in the book he points and says something to the tune of "taa"! Today he was going through his animal book and when he got to the page with the starfish on it he pointed to it and said taa!!! At night he loves to crane his neck all the way back to look up at the stars. Very, very cute!! Soon he will be wishing upon the stars!

I never went overboard or overloaded him with learning sign language, but there are a few that he has picked up and uses (eat, more, all done). The other day he put eat and more together!! He may not be talking in sentences, but he can sign a two word sentence!!! GO GUS!!

Mimicking is very prevalent right now. The Wiggles sing this song "Rock-a-Bye Your Bear" and in the song they nod their head, clap their hands, turn around, rock the bear, wave their hands in the air and shh! shh! shh! (with finger over lips) and does all the hand motions with them. Our favorite motions that he mimics is when he pretends to rock the bear and the shh! shh! shh!! I will try to get it on video to share with ya'll!

One of his favorite songs right now is "There Ain't No Road Too Long" sung by Big Bird and Waylon Jennings. In the song Waylon points and shakes his finger and Gus does it along with him!! This is such a fun age!!!

Gus, you crack Mommy and Daddy up everyday multiple times a day! Thank you!! You make our lives complete and we love you to infinity and beyond!!! :-)

The Verdict.....its not Eczema

It is Atopic Dermatitis, which from doing a little research is in the eczema family, but is not considered full on eczema. Basically Gus is coming into contact with something that is causing an allergic reaction on his trunk area. We went to the dermatologist today and Gus was such a big boy. He sat on my lap while I filled out the mound of new patient papers, gave lots and lots of sweet eyes to the girls behind the counter and when we got into the room he gave the doctor two high fives!! He let me take his shirt off and undo his diaper a little to show the doctor the rash. Since he was so good the nurse gave him a sucker. His face lit up when she walked in with it :-)

He was prescribed a topical cream and if we see no improvement by next week we have to go back to the doctor. The doctor suggested going back to using Dreft on his cloths/towels, etc. and to bath him in Cetaphil. He suggested we could have a biopsy done to see what is causing the reaction, but we don't want to put Gus through that at this time. Not to mention the doctor said if it were his child he would not do it at this point. We will exhaust all other options before taking that route. I will let you know how the cream works and if we ever get to the bottom of the irritant.

Freebird

Jake and I just watched the last "Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien". I had a lump in my throat throughout the entire show and even shed a few tears, especially when he got choked up. I can't believe the show is over but he did go out with a bang....Will Ferrell with a cow bell singing a very fitting song for the moment...."Freebird" and Conan on a guitar! Whatever Conan's next venture is we will be faithful followers/viewers. Not much to say except that I am very bummed out about this and probably won't, well I won't watch Leno. The skunk had his run. The young crowd wants to see the tall Irish redhead, not the old skunk! Sorry about the rant. TEAM COCO maybe off the air for now, but have no fear he will come back better and stronger! Conan O'Brien for life! Peace!

Words of the Week

Gus is very vocal, in his own language, but this week he has been saying some new words. We know that he is taking everything we tell him in and that he is comprehending everything. If we ask him to get something, to do something, where is an object or to put something away he will go get it, do it, telling or show us where the object is or putting the item away. It is so neat to watch him and to see when he has completed the task because he is so proud of himself. We know he takes it all in because I once wiped a DVD to make sure it was clean before putting it to play and now each time we change out the DVD Gus has to wipe it off on his leg (usually he has the wrong side down) but it is just the cutest thing. We can't wait to hear his voice talking in sentences. He has this new cry that is a little deeper than his usual cry and it is so cute!! Well I'm sure you are wanting to know what he has been saying. He does not say these on command, but at his leisure or when he feels it is necessary.

si-sit = sister (what we sometimes call Buttercup)

he has shape cube and he can put all the shapes in the cube with little to no help


I know I have listed more than just words, but this blog is to document milestones and to keep the family abreast of what is going on in our lives. We Gus does begin to speak he will have ALOT to say!! I will try to post words of the week once a week so we can compare and see what he has picked up from week to week!!

Flushing Machine

Gusley's objective for today: Slam the lid down on the toilet, flush the toilet and as soon as it is full and stops making the filling noise, flush it again, wait, then repeat!!! Keep repeating throughout the day each time we pass either bathroom. This is what happens when we are on rainy day schedule day #2....over coloring, dancing, singing, etc....on to flushing!!! Just so long as we do not see a rise in the water bill all is good!!!

My Purpose........

Shh Shh Shh

Over the last week Gus has been putting his little finger over his mouth and saying "shh shh shh". It is really cute. Every night we read "Goodnight Moon" and his two favorite pages are the bowl full of mush and the quiet old lady whispering 'hush'. It is at that time that I put my finger over my lips and make the sound. He had been doing it as soon as we get to that page. He watches The Wiggles and in the song "Rock-a-bye Your Bear" they also put their finger over their lips and do the shh shh shh. He loves this part and is so happy when it comes on.

This post is for 01.18.10....I logged in at 11:59pm and tried to make it, but I was a minute too late!!

All about timing

Gus has had a rash of some sort on his trunk area for a few weeks. When it started is was just a small dry patch. Over the last few days the patch has grown and he began to scratch at it. I have been doing oodles of research and have come to the conclusion that it is Eczema. I have not switched laundry detergent, fabric softener, etc. and he has no known food allergies so seems like all signs point to eczema. We have been bathing him in lukewarm water with Aveeno sensitive skin soap and take him out of the tub as soon as we are done (he has plenty of play time before we bath) so that he is not sitting in the soapy water and at every diaper change we apply hydro cortisone cream and Eucerin moisture lotion to help keep his skin moisturized. Through all the information that I have digested this weekend on this I have read that most children do out grow this. We plan to get him in to see a dermatologist this week so that we can be 100% sure it is in fact eczema.

I am sure you are wondering why I titled this post 'all about timing'. When I logged in and looked at the new posts from the blogs that I follow there was this post front and center and the most recent post..... http://ecoetsy.blogspot.com/2010/01/eco-tip-of-week-eczema-and-food.html Timing, perfect timing. It is a rather lengthy post, but the gist of it is that foods that we eat can trigger the outbreak of eczema. I knew that is was heat related, but now I will have to be more mindful of what we are eating when the outbreak is at its peak. I read all the comments and found some really helpful tips and I will be trying them. I will be sure to give an update on how this goes. For now I am super tired and I have the post in my favorites so I will read it again tomorrow and take notes of the suggestions. If any of you have any remedies, suggestions, etc. please share them with us as we are open to any and all!! Thanks!

Conan don't go

The past few weeks there have been talks about moving Leno to Conan's spot and bumping Conan back a 1/2 hour....NOT COOL. The latest is that NBC is going to drop Conan and next Friday could be his last show.....REALLY NOT COOL.

Jake has been watching Conan since he first came on the air and he got me watching him. Now we are addicted and watch it every night. It is one of the only shows that I truly look forward to. What are we going to watch if Conan goes? who will take his place? NBC have you lost your mind? Seriously, you would rather jerk Conan off the air and show more Leno? Get your head checked and listen to what the people want.....WE WANT CONAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Deuce is Loose!!!

This has been one hell of a season for the Saints...13-3, not too shabby!! The best news came today when they announced that Deuce McAllister is back. We will be glued to the tv tomorrow for the big game....Who Dat!!!!

A Breath of Fresh Air.......

FINALLY!!! We were able to play outside today. I do not know who was more excited, mommy, Gusley or Buttercup! The weather was absolutely perfect. Not too cold, not too hot. As soon as I opened the door the dog took off and Gus was right behind her. We fetched, we did sidewalk chalk, we chatted, played chase and had a merry ol' time! It looks like we may be able to have another play date outside again tomorrow, but Sunday is 90% chance of rain.....we shall see what the weather brings! 23 months.....

23 months?!! Where do I even start? First and foremost the past 23 months have been a wonderful journey. From birth to sitting up, crawling, walking, beginning to talk and to think now a full blown toddler is in the house!!!! It is a very exciting time in our house these days! For example every night we count with Gus and we hold up our fingers for each number and he follows along on his hands. Tonight each time we got to five he would squeal with excitement and sometimes he just could not wait until five and would squeal at four!!!

Gusley still enjoys watching Stuart Little, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Handy Manny, The Backyardagains and The Wiggles, but he has found a new love for Sesame Street, Follow that Bird (1985 movie about Big Bird leaving the Street) and Disney's new movie UP!!

He is really into music and at the tender age of two he has enough instruments to be a successful one man band. The inventory includes: 2 recorders, 2 possibly 3 harmonicas, a tambourine, a small drum and a drum set, 3 guitars (not with real strings yet), a xylophone, a kazoo, a few shakers, Daddy's keyboard (that he knows how to turn on and adjust the volume and play), and a clapper. I'm sure I am forgetting something!! I think he will play at least one instrument, don't you?

He has added a few more words to his vocabulary, but does not say them on command. He says them as he deems it necessary! Di-per when he needs to be changed, duck for his rubber ducks in the tub, well any duck he sees, up-dare for upstairs, UP, be-bir for Big Bird, car for Oscar, and ussel for Russell (the little boy in UP). He is very good at uh-oh, ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, daddy and yesterday when Jake walked in from work he looked up at him and said "Hey Da"!!

His diet varies from day to day. I just offer him a variety and he chooses what he is in the mood for. I do not like to stress myself out over how much he does or does not eat. I just look at it like when he gets hungry (if he didn't eat much at a meal) then he will let me know. He does sign 'eat' and 'more' and does make me aware of this! A constant is cheese and bananas and yogurt.

Gusley is very much an organizer. I think he gets it from his Mommy. Every day when he takes his nap and once he is in bed for the night all the toys go to their places and are neatly organized for him to start a new afternoon or day of play. If he takes a toy out to play with it he makes sure to pick it back up and it usually gets put where it was taken from. I can get used to this!! He loves for me to sing the clean-up song and in turn he helps me! Santa brought him an easel and one side is a dry erase/coloring paper and the other side is a chalkboard. I showed him how to erase the chalkboard with a wash cloth and now he will draw something then quickly erase it. This is rather fun to watch...almost looks like an episode of Win, Lose or Draw!!

Since the weather has been so dry our noses don't know what to do. Gus carries around a Kleenex and will wipe his nose (usually there is nothing to wipe) and then head to the garbage to throw the tissue away. Speaking of throwing away, while Gi-Gi and Paw were here he took off his pj pants and Gi-Gi told him to throw them away as a joke and he brought them to the garbage and put them in the can. Smart kid!!

Each morning it is funny to see what he is going to attach to for the day. The last few days it was his little yellow school bus. Yesterday and today is was a pumpkin rubber duck and a fish squirt toy from the tub (both of which are currently sleeping in the bed with him). His harmonica and kazoo have been very close by too!

Mimicking is very big right now. And singing "If you're happy and you know it" and "boom, boom ain't it great to be crazy" in the tub is oodles of fun!

Bedtime kisses are so cute right now. You ask for a kiss and he gives you his cheek. Jake still tells him a 'secret' every night and he loves and anticipates this by putting the back of his neck/ear in Jake's face when he goes to kiss him...very cute!!

It is truly amazing to me to see how much he has grown and all the things he is learning and doing. I find myself just looking at him some days thinking WOW, this is our child. I love every minute of it, even when he decides to throw something down because he is frustrated or when he goes limp like a banana I just have to turn away and chuckle to myself because now I know what I put my mom and dad through. Mom and Dad, thanks for loving me even when I would go limp like a banana!! Fun times in the department of disciplining are knocking at our door. I will be sure to keep y'all abreast on how we are doing!! "These are the days" is my daily mantra and it is so fitting because these are the days that I will cherish the most. The nurturing, mothering, loving, laughing, singing, dancing, running, playing, snacking, napping that we do together is making a lifelong bond between us and it feels good, very good. Spending everyday all day with my son is the greatest feeling in the world and I am so thankful that I am able to do just that. Gusley, Mommy and Daddy love you so very much and you are a remarkable 23 month old toddler. Thank you for being so patient with us. As first time parents this is all new to us too, so bear with us, but I think we are doing a great job, so enjoy the ride!!! Here is our little doodle bop at Sweet CeCe's tonight enjoying some yogurt. I bet you can't guess what flavor he liked???!!

A bottle?

Lately Gus has been very vocal. He may not enunciate each and every word, but he does convey to us what he wants and will let us know if it is NOT what he wants! Today he helped me unload the dishwasher and as we were putting his cups in the cupboard he kept reaching and pointing to a bottle that I had tucked away. I gave him the bottle thinking he just wanted to play with it at his kitchen. Oh no, he had other plans. He stood at the sink pointing and raising the bottle saying something along the lines of "wa, wa, wa" that can only be water. I asked him if he wanted water in the bottle and he beamed ear to ear. I filled the bottle for him and he carried it around while I fixed lunch. Mind you he never took one sip of the water out of the bottle. After lunch he was over it and reached up and put the bottle in the sink. Not sure what that was all about, but I did get a cute picture of him and is prize possession of the day!!

Paran Cory, though you two are far apart you always know just what to get your godchild! Cory gave Gus this Little People Race Track for Christmas and let me just say that we have all had fun with it....even Buttercup! There are two tracks that spin the cars in figure 8's and they just keep spinning until you stop it or the 30 seconds is up. We put Buttercup's ball on it and it was hilarious to watch her attempt to get the ball. Jake was in charge of the throttle and just as she would get close he was 'floor' it!! Cory, thanks for the awesome track and we can't wait for you to come visit so you can join in the fun too!!!
